The Funny Stuff in Fame and Celebrity

Ever notice the silly side of workshiping idols, human or otherwise? I have! Since olden times writers have been ridiculing the idea that you take a bit of wood, stone, gold, or silver, then mold or shape it into a idol and start worshipping it.

But what about people? There is a LOT of that worship going around too!

Here is a good example: I once worked at a place where we regulary trained interns. Our work area had music, and one day we were listening to a certain song. I remarked that I didn't care much for that song compared to something else that the band did. The intern tried to start a fight! What I didn't know was that he worshipped that band and thought anything they did was wonderful. He was ready to get beat up (or maybe die?) defending that view.

Think about that for a moment. How ridiculous can we be? Any human being is just as we all are, full of mistakes and confusion, conceit and blindness. Why worship such a person? Why not look on what they do with open eyes and see them for what they are, and not what you think they are? When you do that instead, you can enjoy what they do more - and enjoy what others have to offer as well.

The funny thing about this is that the people around a person like that often see the person more clearly than they do themselves. People who blindly worship often become the butt of other's jokes! And,they are easy for others to manipulate because of their blindness. It is a peculiarly human form of blindness; in spite of my skeptical mind, I have had times where I did the same - and made just as big of an ass of myself as I've seen anyone else do.

To sum it up, the best thing to do is to not take ourselves or anyone else too seriously - unless we want to be an ass to those around us. It isn't healthy for us or the people we worship.
